SULLIVAN FIRST ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Sullivan Renaissance 2009 Winter Conference and Expo

FERNDALE – Nine individuals, businesses and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to improving the appearance of Sullivan County will be recognized with “2009 Sullivan First Achievement Awards” during the Sullivan Renaissance Conference and Expo on Saturday, February 21 at the CVI Building in Ferndale, NY.

This year’s “Sullivan First Achievement Awards” will be given to:

·         Liberty Shoprite for participating in Sullivan County’s “Bring Your Own Bag Day”

·         Garry’s Great American in Liberty for participating in Sullivan County’s “Bring Your Own Bag Day”

·         Pecks Markets in Callicoon, Eldred, Jeffersonville and Narrowsburg for participating in Sullivan County’s “Bring Your Own Bag Day”

·         Wurtsboro Center IGA Supermarket  for participating in Sullivan County’s “Bring Your Own Bag Day”

·         Jeanne Tulp, Innkeeper, Lazy Pond Bed & Breakfast in Liberty – for outstanding gardens and beautification efforts

·         Linda Babicz – for her long-standing contribution as a Sullivan Renaissance volunteer and her leadership efforts to green the Town of Callicoon

·         Ron Royster – for outstanding volunteerism as part of the beautification efforts in Monticello

·         Monticello Housing Authority – for ongoing efforts to beautify and involve the community

 

A special Seasonal Community Achievement Award will be given in the summer to:

·         Lipkowitz Bungalow Colony of Ferndale – for outstanding gardens and landscaping efforts

 

The conference – titled “Celebrating Sullivan County: A Place Worth Caring About” – will feature exhibits and workshops on celebrating the bicentennial and historic preservation, Sullivan Renaissance programs, green and sustainable resources, gardening, youth activities, beautification and community development efforts.  Author James Howard Kunstler will deliver the keynote address.

Details of this year’s Sullivan Renaissance grant program will be announced and 2009 applications will be available.

The conference begins at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast and expo.  The program starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 1:00 p.m.  Workshops include:

·         Elements of Sullivan Renaissance – Richard Sush, Helen Budrock

·         Sullivan Renaissance Tool Box – Christine Ahearn, Dave Moore, Susan Runnels

·         Setting the Stage for a Garden – Will Foster

·         Create a Showing of Flowers – Vivian Ginsberg, Bill Korwan

·         Playground Projects – Robert Justus, Susan Runnels

·         Youth are the Difference – Laura Quigley, Lisa Lyons

·         Using Water Wisely – Deborah Sweeton

·         Living Locally – Challey Comer

·         Timber, Tanning & Tourism: An Overview of Sullivan County History – John Conway

·         Historic Preservation Tool Box – Susan Roth
