[LIBERTY] – Several communities in Sullivan County are still looking for assistance with their 2014 Sullivan Renaissance gardening projects before judging begins on August 7. Volunteers who help on these projects are eligible to apply for one of two different college scholarships. Applications for both programs are available online at www.sullivanrenaissance.org
For a list of groups and projects that can use assistance, call Sullivan Renaissance at 845-295-2445.
Sullivan Renaissance Scholarship
The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan Counties, through a donor-advised fund established by Sullivan Renaissance, offers a limited number of scholarships to Sullivan County residents who volunteer and make a significant contribution to a 2014 Renaissance project. Scholarships are for the 2015 spring semester at an undergraduate college of one’s choice. Recipients will be announced at the Sullivan Renaissance Awards Ceremony on August 11 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel.
Interested applicants must demonstrate that they have volunteered for a 2014 Renaissance project in a significant way. They need to include a letter of support from the project leader. They should indicate the college or university that they will be attending, as well as their chosen area of study. Candidates must describe their contribution to Sullivan Renaissance, the impact the experience had on them, and why they have chosen their particular area of study.
Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2014. An interview of final candidates may be conducted before selection. The scholarship is available to students either currently enrolled in college full-time or planning to attend college full-time in the fall of 2014. Scholarship funds will be released to the recipients’ college financial office for the 2015 spring semester.
Last year the Community Foundation awarded eight Sullivan Renaissance Scholarships in various amounts up to $2000. Twelve scholarships were awarded in 2012, nine in 2011, seven in 2010 and 2009; and six in 2008.
SUNY Sullivan Scholarship
The SUNY Sullivan Foundation will also award scholarships to volunteers involved in 2014 Renaissance projects. The application deadline is Monday, July 21, 2014.
Scholarships of $1500 are available for full-time students. To receive a full-time award, an applicant must be a Sullivan County resident attending or planning to attend SUNY Sullivan full-time for the 2014-2015 academic year and must be a June 2014 graduate of a Sullivan County High School.
To receive a part-time award of $750, a volunteer must be a resident of Sullivan County who has been out of high school for more than one year. The applicant must have a high school diploma or GED certificate or college transcript and plan to register at SUNY Sullivan part-time for a minimum of six credits and a maximum of eleven credits for the fall and spring semesters.
Applicants must volunteer in a 2014 community project and include a letter of recommendation from the leader of the Sullivan Renaissance group. They must answer the question “How have I, as a member of my community, been part of the Sullivan Renaissance?” (250-words) or submit a photographic portfolio or a video of their participation in the project.
In 2013 two full-time SUNY Sullivan Scholarships of $1000 were given to volunteers involved in Sullivan Renaissance projects who are attending SUNY Sullivan. Since these scholarships began in 2003 a total of fourteen full-time and nine part-time scholarships have been awarded.
Most communities have been hard at work on their projects since grants were awarded in April and are looking for help before judging begins on August 7.
