Municipalities and Volunteers come together to create, beautify and care for public spaces | May. 2, 2018
[PHILLIPSPORT] – The public is invited to join residents of Phillipsport at the Phillipsport Community Center for a “Golden Feather Celebration” this Saturday, August 23 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.
Phillipsport received the Golden Feather Award, a $25,000 grant presented by NYS Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther at the Sullivan Renaissance Awards Ceremony earlier this month. It was given to one of five large community projects that exhibited the highest level of excellence by incorporating beautification as part of a long-term strategy.
The celebration kicks off in the Phillipsport Community Center (PCC) on 657 Red Hill Road with a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. including presentation of the Golden Feather check, and awarding of the PCC “Silver Spoon” and “Silver Shovel” awards for volunteers. Musician Chris Cernak will entertain, while a continuous slide show will show photographs of the volunteers and the projects. Light refreshments will include finger sandwiches, cheese and fruit from Peter’s Market in Napanoch.
Maps showing the locations of the gardens will be distributed. Starting at 1:00 p.m., visitors are encouraged to tour Poplar Grove Cemetery (where cupcakes will be served) and to visit the Gateway Garden at Route 209 (where watermelon will be available). Rennie, the Sullivan Renaissance Rooster, will be present for pictures at the community center.
For a flyer showing eleven winning communities announced at the Sullivan Renaissance Awards Ceremony, go to www.sullivanrenaissance.org and click on the “Winning Projects Map” Quicklink in the upper right hand corner. The flyer will also be available at the PCC on Saturday.
Sullivan Renaissance is a beautification and community development program principally funded by the Gerry Foundation. Sponsors include Bold Gold Media Group/Thunder 102, FisherMears Associates, Kristt Company, Robert Green Dealerships, Sullivan County Democrat, The River Reporter, Thompson Sanitation, and WSUL/WVOS.
