FERNDALE – OCTOBER IS NATIONAL FARM TO SCHOOL MONTH, a time to celebrate the connections happening all over the country between children and local food.
In Sullivan County, the Catskill Edible Garden Project (CEGP) will host “Chef in the Classroom” events at the Emma C. Chase Elementary School, Liberty Elementary School, Sullivan West Elementary School and the Hebrew Day School as part of National Farm to School Month.
Chef in the Classroom is a hands-on way to get children excited about eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Studies show that children who actively engage in cooking are more likely to try new foods.
“Throughout October, we’ll share stories and information on our Facebook page about how farm to school contributes to vibrant communities in Sullivan County and empowers children and their families to make healthy food choices,” said Colleen Emery, Project Coordinator at Sullivan Renaissance.
The Catskill Edible Garden Project (CEGP) is a partnership between Catskill Mountainkeeper, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County, and Sullivan Renaissance. The project works with schools and community organizations to design edible gardens as living, outdoor educational and gathering spaces.
In 2010, Congress declared October National Farm to School Month, recognizing the important role farm to school plays in promoting well-being among children and strong local economies. Farm to School inspires kids to think about where their food comes from and make healthier choices.
